HAWKS & FALCONS

A lot of people say how lucky we are in Hawaii because we don't have any BOP's (Birds of Prey).

Wrong.  Are we lucky, yes.  Not because we don't have BOP's but because we don't have a problem with the BOP's like most people in the states do.

Here on the Big Island we have the Hawaiian Hawk, I'o.  Since 2008 the U.S Fish & Wildlife services had been petitioning to have the Hawaiian Hawk removed from the Federal Listing of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.   (They have recovered to a point of being a nuisance, IMHO.)  Fortunately they are not as proficient at catching our birds as the Cooper Hawk.  From my own experience with them, they cause the most problems when trying to settle youngsters.  The I'o is supposedly extinct on the rest of the islands that is why you don't hear the flyers on Oahu complaining about them.

We also have the falcons that migrate here during the winter.  Oahu has more of a problem with them and I believe it is because of the terrain on Oahu.  They have the two mountain ranges that make for a perfect habitat for the falcons.

Like I said, we are lucky that the problem is not as bad as elsewhere but we do have BOP's.
